Fair Housing

The City of Oakdale is committed to fair housing in our community. The City affirmed its commitment to fair housing for all residents by establishing a Fair Housing Policy (PDF).

Fair housing refers to the right of all people to fair housing choice. This means that people of similar means have similar choices for housing, regardless of race, sex, national origin, religion, familial status, or disability. In Minnesota, people are also protected from discrimination on the basis of their sexual orientation, marital status, receipt of public assistance, and creed. The right to fair housing was established by the federal Civil Rights Act of 1968 (and as amended in 1974 and 1988); and the Minnesota Human Rights Act of 1973 (statute 364A).

Despite 50 years of fair housing law, discrimination and unfair treatment still occur in housing transactions. Read on to learn more about fair housing and what to do if you experience housing discrimination.
