Programs for the Kids

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Drop off pumpkin creations October 22 - 24 during business hours | Discovery Center
 
Calling all pumpkin carvers! We are hosting a pumpkin carving contest as part of our Flashlight Pumpkin Hunt! The pumpkins will be displayed at the event and attendees will vote. The contest is open to carvers of all ages/skill levels. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Best, Spookiest, and Bumpkin Pumpkin (ages 12 and under). All entries must be family friendly.

Curious Critters Club (Ages 3 to 6)

Select Friday mornings | 9:30 – 11 AM | Discovery Center

Children participate in discussions, play games, watch DVDs, and create projects. $7 per class. Register one week prior to class!

Pass, Punt & Kick Competition (Ages 6 to 12)

Sunday, October 14 | 10 AM | Walton Park

Come to Walton Park for a Sunday morning skills competition. Test your skills in the punting, passing, and kicking aspects of football. Scores will be tallied, and prizes will be rewarded to top finishers.
 
Age Groups:

• 6 to 7 years
• 8 to 10 years
• 11 to 12 years

All genders welcome! $5. Register by October 8!

Fall Storytime for Preschoolers: Kadir Nelson

Wednesday, October 17 | 10:30 AM | Discovery Center

Join Katelyn from the Oakdale Library for a series of special preschool story times! We will have fun talking, singing, reading, writing, and playing together. We will focus on concepts such as counting, colors, sharing, emotions, patterns, and the alphabet. A simple craft will follow. A free program recommended for developmental ages 0 to 5 and their grown-ups. Free. Please call 651-747-3860 to reserve your spot!

Indoor Youth Tennis Lessons (Ages 8 to 12)

Mondays, Oct. 29, Nov. 5, 19, 26, Dec. 3, 17, Jan. 7, 14 | 7 - 7:45 PM | Discovery Center

Come learn some basic fundamentals of tennis in this fun class! Skills taught include grip, stance, swing, and more in a fun and safe learning environment. We use USTA approved tennis equipment designed for youth tennis. If you have your own racquet, please bring it along each week. The Recreation Department has a few to loan each night. Instructor: Dan Stumpf, North High School girl's tennis coach and Hill Murray boy's. $40. Register by October 22!

Farmers Market - Last Date of the Season!

Wednesday, October 3 | 2 to 6PM | City Hall Parking Lot

Purchase locally grown products that promote healthy lifestyles, while sustaining local agriculture at the Oakdale Farmers Market. Pick up a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, a bouquet of flowers, a loaf of bread, dessert, and so much more! Check out the Community Booth to see what is happening locally, and enter your name for a chance to win the Vendors Variety Gift Basket. This is the vendors' way of saying thank you for supporting the community and local businesses. EBT/Food Stamps accepted!

ViniYoga

Discovery Center

ViniYoga is a therapeutic style of yoga which adapts to the needs of each student. Classes will include a blend of gentle yoga postures, breathing, and simple meditations to help the body build strength and flexibility while remaining steady and comfortable. Beginners are welcome as are those who have practiced yoga before and all students are encouraged to move at their own pace. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat.  
 
Tuesday Morning Yoga Flow:

Wellness 50+ “Honoring Choices: Advanced Care Planning and Why It’s Important”

Talking about end of life care needn't be difficult, especially when all is well. Advance care planning often includes a Health Care Directive - a written document that informs your family and physician of your preferences about life-sustaining treatments and your wishes for medical care in case you are unable to make or communicate your decisions directly. Another approach is a Physician Orders for Non-Sustaining Treatment (POLST). This event should answer any questions you may have about advance care planning and how to start gathering information. Adult Road Trip: “Saint Paul’s Defining Moments"

As proud Minnesotans we're off to St. Paul for a guided tour of the Minnesota State Capitol building to see this magnificent 1905 masterpiece returned to its original grandeur. After the tour, lunch is at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. Choose your entrée when registering. After lunch, the trip is off to The Cabinets of Curiosity Tour at the James J. Hill Center. Get an inside look at Mr. Hill's most significant gift to the city of Saint Paul, hailed by modern critics as "a high point in Beaux Arts architecture in Minnesota!" For those who are willing and able, explore secret spots, glass catwalks, hidden vaults and high up spaces. $57. Register by October 10!

Adult Road Trip: “Teen Idol: The Bobby Vee Story"

1959. With the tragic crash of Buddy Holly's plane, a bright new star from Fargo emerged. Fifteen-year-old Bobby Velline performed at the Winter Dance Party in Moorhead, MN the day the music died. Bobby went on to record his first hit single, "Suzie Baby," in Minneapolis - and soon would become a teen idol. He appeared on American Bandstand with Dick Clark, and became an international star who thrilled audiences for more than a decade with Top 40 hits. Hear "Devil or Angel," "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," "Come Back When You Grow Up Girl" and many more. Follow Bobby's musical journey that includes fellow pop stars like Little Anthony & The Imperials, Ronnie & The Ronettes, Dion, and Del Shannon.After the performance it's off to Burger Moe's for lunch. $75.
